Abstract

Urban environment is losing its character due to unregulated development which poses challenges to maintaining its symbolic meanings, memories, and identities that are substantial for the urban community. A key factor in sustaining urban character includes fostering a sense of place of an urban community. Sense of place refers to individuals' subjective and emotional attachment to their environment, encompassing physical, social, and symbolic dimensions. Previous studies reported that sense of place is closely connected to social capital. Despite this, the positioning role of social capital towards sense of place is hardly researched and analysed systematically. This paper aims to explore the trend of studies on the relationship between social capital and sense of place through a systematic literature review using Scopus and Web of Science database. Result shows the expanding trend of this topic, however, is limited in the context of Malaysia urban area. This study contributes to the knowledge of the potential role of social capital to enhance sense of place which contributes to the sustainability of urban characters in Malaysia context.
