Abstract

According to the 2020–2034 Aceh Besar Regency Tourism Development Plan, Lhoknga Beach Recreation Area is one of the province’s leading tourism destinations. Coastal tourism destinations often exhibit high dependence on private vehicles, resulting in congestion, environmental degradation, and reduced accessibility. Therefore, the provision of public transportation is essential to facilitate tourist mobility between origins and destinations. This study aims to examine tourists’ potential demand for public transportation and identify the key factors influencing their willingness to shift from private vehicles. A quantitative approach was adopted, with a questionnaire administered to 306 tourists visiting six beach destinations, and the data were analysed using factor analysis. The results reveal three principal factors influencing tourists' potential demand for public transportation: (1) traffic and cost-related factors, including congestion, fuel prices, parking limitations, and safety concerns; (2) service quality attributes, such as punctuality, comfort, cleanliness, accessibility, and information availability; and (3) tourists’ perceptions of public transport, including flexibility, privacy, and perceived mobility constraints. These findings suggest that enhancing service quality and addressing congestion and travel cost issues can significantly increase tourists’ acceptance of public transportation. This study contributes empirical evidence to support sustainable transport planning and policy development for tourism destinations in coastal areas.
