Abstract

This study covers road distress that is further discussed as flexible pavement distress. Road condition is crucial for safety and is also used to forecast maintenance schedules. The objectives of this study are focused on determining the road defects and identifying the conditions of the road defects in Mersing district. The method used in this study was based on observations made on the road referring to ASTM D6433 and Technical Manual, Pavement Maintenance Management which according to the Public Work Department (PWD) standard. This research concentrates on two selected roads in the Mersing district which are (i) Tanjung Resang Road and (ii) Tanjung Resang - Penyabong Road. For data collection, mixed methods such as observations (picture) and calculation of Pavement Condition Index (PCI) is used. The findings indicated that the road condition in these two Mersing roads requires more regular maintenance. The results show that the lowest priority roads require better maintenance planning and consistent implementation, as well as re-planning of maintenance structure. Overall, this study contributes novel insights into the relationship between deteriorating road conditions and the increasing demand for maintenance. The result can benefit planning of road upgrading as well as bigger scope in infrastructure of urban planning. Future research could investigate this problem successfully by expanding their data into more districts and the number of roads.
