Abstract

Despite centuries of development, many traditional villages in China retain complete settlement forms and traditional buildings, reflecting strong spatial resilience. The village construction system is vital for spatial resilience, yet research on traditional village resilience remains limited. This paper explores traditional village construction’s spatial and cultural characteristics through the lens of rural resilience, using Zhuqiao and Youdian Villages in Jiangxi Province as case studies to support heritage preservation and transmission. This study employs literature research, fieldwork, and space syntax analysis to examine the construction characteristics of traditional villages. Key findings include: (1)Traditional villages rely on production space and choose high ground and shallow water to live in, forming a pattern of “Forest-Village-Field-Water.” (2) The overall layout of the villages is compact and closed externally to ensure defence and open internally to promote communication. The public space assumes essential spiritual and religious functions, enhancing the village’s stability and continuity. (3) The water management system is the core wisdom of village construction. It plays a vital role in improving the village’s adaptability to natural disasters and enhancing the comfort of the living environment. These findings offer insights into modern village construction systems.
